The Geneva Women’s March for Dignity is the next chapter in the global non-violent civil rights movement in response to the recent wave of xenophobia, sexism, racism, disregard of environmental concerns, intolerance and nationalism expressed across the globe. Our march upholds the principles of democracy and honors the champions of human rights, dignity, and justice who have come before and who stand among us.
In recent years, election rhetoric in many countries has insulted, demonized, and threatened many of us. There has been a profound deepening of the divisions — racial, ethnic, religious, economic, social and sexual identity — in many countries.. We seek to address these divisions and stand together in the face of injustice, recognizing that defending the most marginalized among us is defending us all.
The Geneva Women’s March for Dignity is a grassroots movement initially formed by women, standing together in solidarity with our partners and children, for the protection of our rights, our safety, our health, our environment, and our families — recognizing that our vibrant and diverse communities are the strength of our societies. We join in diversity to show our presence in numbers too great to ignore and we call on all defenders of human rights to join us.
The Geneva Women’s March for Dignity will be addressing the following issues:
1. Women’s rights are human rights: Promoting the #HERS framework for women’s rights – Health Economic Representation and Safety.
2. Protecting the rights of minorities of all kinds including refugees and migrants.
3. Defending and promoting democracy and democratic institutions in Eastern and Western Europe.
4. Recognizing the importance of climate change, and the role of environmental sustainability in supporting human rights and development.
5. Standing in solidarity with all women — whether they are in the Global North or South, indigenous, poor, LBTI or part of other historically marginalized groups — as they advocate for promotion and protection of their inalienable human rights.
This challenging and ambitious goal requires our commitment and action far beyond January 21, 2017. The Global Women’s March is just the first step; what comes after is up to us ALL.
